Question by LovesDawgz: What is the best recommendation for a free list serve solution for my non-profit on our website? Thanks~?
I need to set up a list serv on our website for emails & discussion for the community organization I belong to. Is there a free solution for this as opposed to listserve.com (which I thought had a free download, but I don’t seem to see it on the site.) Thanks so much.

You probably didn’t get replies to this because it was under “careers and employment”. People who know about email lists don’t necessarily look there.

What about Yahoo! groups or Google groups? You can create a group on Yahoo! or Google and it will have email lists, discussion forums, a shared group calendar that can send out email notifications on upcoming events, the whole 9 yards. They’re all free. People see ads when they visit them, but it’s free.

There’s also crowdvine.com which tries to offer Facebook-like functionality for your community, but for closed groups (as opposed to the whole world the way facebook does).

If you’re a system administrator and you’ve got enough access, the mailing list software of choice is called Mailman and it’s from list.org. But few people who run small-time web sites have the access and skills to install that.

Good luck

Question by graceygranger: Why are website security codes so hard to read?
Why can’t they just have an image with normal font in black and white? Because, maybe I’m getting this all wrong, but isn’t the point that the code is in an image, therefore proventing computers from spaming? Wouldn’t creating an image that looks like it’s not an image work just as well?

People make programs which are able to read text, the closer something resembles real text the easier it is to bypass. At the moment people write programs which just randomly guess the code based on a rather poor algorithm and usually gain access through that, there are plans to boost the security further by having text further obscured, but who knows!

Question by Conrad: How can I increase the size, options and services on my website without making it too complicated for users?
Obviously you can’t expand your website without making it a little more complicated.

But what are some practical tips on expanding the nature and scope of the services offered on your website without making it too complicated?

Good navigation. Good navigation is the key to make a good web site. As long as users can navigate your site to get to the information they want to get to, it doesn’t matter how much content you have. Of course there is many ways to set up the navigation for your site but you have to find the one that is right for your content.

http://www.newegg.com/ has tons of content but nice navigation makes it easy for users to get to the product they want. http://www.amazon.com/ has similar navigation using horizonal rather than vertical menus. Similar navigation can be found on http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml

Surf the web for some navigation that would fit best for your site. There is plenty studies on navigation since it can make or break a site.

Question by DarkWolf: Is there an effective and accurate translation software solution for my website.?
I would like to translate my English website to French, Italian, German, Spanish among other languages and need an affordable software solution solution.

Best answer:

Answer by meanburrito920
unfortunately, current software can only do literal translations, which fail to catch the subtleties and idioms of the language. If you do not care about your site being a “correct” translation and just want other people to know what it is about, I suggest you contact Babel or another such company which does software translations online for free.

Question by i luv hockey: What is so good about making your own website?
I heard about AdSense Google and how making your own website can make you money? How is this even possible when you have to pay to put your website up?

Seriously, What is so good about making your own website?? Why do people waste their time with it?

Best answer:

Answer by Dilyan
You can have your website for free – blogger.com allows you to start your own blog and to add advertising on it — the rationale is that if you have large readers base you actually become opinion leader and people trust you for the things you say/write. Ads delivered by AdSense are contextual in their nature – thus, your readers actually can become buyers to the products advertised in your blog. In order to keep you motivated to continue writing, part of the revenues come into your pocket as advertising revenues.
The catch is that you have to have really huge readers base and your readers have to be really into buying stuff advertised on your website or blog. Few influential bloggers are working full time as bloggers and make over 100k per year — however, you have to be really really good at writing good and interesting stuff in order to make that amount of money.

Question by Luke K: I need a simple website, similar to craigslist for a school project. How do I go about doing it?
It is basically craigslist, except it will be to sell books at our school. I need to know what skills, scripting languages, database, etc., as well as what I need to do for it.
Please only answer if you know something about web development.

I know that there are a billion ways to go about this, but I need to keep it simple.

Since it is a school project, learning new things about web development is a good thing.
I never said I needed a replica of craigslist, I am doing a school project that is a simple ad site targeted at books. I already know Javascript, HTML, and a little Flash.
